  9. What is this:
  10. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  11. Tengwar-Quenya is a MS-Windows 3.1 compatible Truetype (and ATM) font
  12. for the Elvish Tengwar alphabet. It can be used to write Elf language 
  13. inscriptions with MS-Windows applications. (Quenya is one of the
  14. languages of the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien's book: "Lord of the Rings".)
  15. Also included is a document detailing how to write with Tengwar while
  16. using this font plus a useful MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic Macro.

  20. What do these files do:
  21. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  22. The files included in this archive file are:
  23.  
  24. QUENYA.TTF .... The MS-Windows-3.1 Truetype Font file.
  25.  
  26. QUENYA.AFM .... The MS-Windows-3.1 compatible Adobe Type Manager (ATM) 
  27. QUENYA.INF .... version of the font. (Requires four files.)
  28. QUENYA.PFB .... 
  29. QUENYA.PFM .... 
  30.  
  31. QUENYA.DOC .... The MS-Word-6.0 font documentation, instructions and 
  32.                 examples.
  33. MACRO.TXT ..... The MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic Macro: "Tengwar Typewriter 
  34.                 for English".

  36. QUENYA1.WRI ... The MS-Write-3.1 version of the font documentation.
  37. QUENYA2.WRI ... Contained in two files. (Not as pretty as the 
  38.                 MS-Word-6.0 document, but better than nothing.)

  42. How to install a MS-Windows-3.1 Truetype font:
  43. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  44. If you don't know how to install new Truetype fonts, follow the 
  45. directions below (Since you are reading this file, I will assume that
  46. you have already "PKUNZIP'ed" the ZIP file onto a temp directory on 
  47. your hard disk.):
  48.  
  49.   - Start MS-Windows-3.1.
  50.   - Go to the MAIN folder and select CONTROL PANEL.
  51.   - Select FONTS.
  52.   - Select ADD.
  53.   - In this dialog box, go to the section marked 'Drives' and use the
  54.     scroll buttons to click on the drive (C:, D:, or whatever) you 
  55.     have the unzipped files to.
  56.   - Use the section marked 'Directories' to the left of 'Drives' to
  57.     select the directory the unzipped files are in.
  58.   - The font names will appear in the section marked 'List of Fonts'.
  59.   - Click on the font you want to install (using the mouse).
  60.   - Click on 'OK'.

  62. This should install the font so that your Windows applications can use 
  63. it. Don't forget to check the quenya.doc file included in quenya16.zip.
  64. It will explain the key-mapping and show an example of font usage.

  68. Viewing the included MS-Word-6.0 document file:
  69. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  70. If you have MS-Word-6.0, then viewing the included documentation is 
  71. easy. Just Start MS-Word and open the "QUENYA.DOC" file.

  73. Tip: Since MS-Word-6.0 is a WYSIWYG word processor, the resolution of 
  74. fonts displayed on the screen is based on the resolution of your 
  75. Default MS-Windows-3.1 printer driver. For example if your Default 
  76. printer is set to a 180dpi 24pin dot-matrix printer (like mine); a 
  77. MS-Word document will appear much clearer and crisper on your screen 
  78. if you specify a 600dpi postscript laser printer as your Default 
  79. printer. (Even if you don't have a 600dpi postscript laser printer!)

  83. Loading the included MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic Macro:
  84. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  85. If you don't know how to install a MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic Macro, follow 
  86. the directions below (Since you are reading this file, I will assume 
  87. that you have already "PKUNZIP'ed" the ZIP file onto a temp directory

  90.   - From MS-Windows-3.1, run MS-Notepad.
  91.   - Select the "File" Drop-down menu and choose the "Open" item.
  92.   - In this dialog box, go to the section marked 'Drives' and use the
  93.     scroll buttons to click on the drive (C:, D:, or whatever) you 
  94.     have the unzipped files to.
  95.   - Use the section marked 'Directories' to select the directory the 
  96.     unzipped files are in.
  97.   - Select the "MACRO.TXT" file.
  98.   - Copy entire contents of the "MACRO.TXT" file into the clipboard. 
  99.     (Highlight all of the text in the Notepad window, then Select the 
  100.     "Edit" Drop-down menu and choose the "Copy" item.)
  101.   - From MS-Windows-3.1, run MS-Word-6.0.
  102.   - Select the "Tools" Drop-down menu and choose the "Macros" item.
  103.   - Enter a name for the macro (such as "TengwarQuenya16") and click
  104.     "Create" button.
  105.   - Delete the default text ("Sub MAIN" & "End Sub") from the Macro 
  106.     text window.
  107.   - Copy entire contents of the clipboard to the Macro text window.
  108.     (Select the "Edit" Drop-down menu and choose the "Paste" item.)
  109.   - Close the Macro text window. (Select the "File" Drop-down menu 
  110.     and choose the "Close" item.)
  111.   - Click on "Yes".
  112.  
  113. This should install the macro so that your MS-Word-6.0 can use it. 
  114. Invoke it just as you would any other MS-Word-6.0 macro. You may want 
  115. to even add it to your MS-Word-6.0 toolbar.

  119. What if you don't have MS-Word-6.0:
  120. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  121. If you don't have MS-Word-6.0, then you won't be able to directly
  122. view the enclosed MS-Word-6.0 document. To view the document, your 
  123. options are as follows:
  124.  
  125. 1) If you have access to the Internet, download Microsoft's FREEWARE 
  126.    MS-Word-6.0 document viewer. It is available via anonymous FTP at:
  127.  
  128.      "ftp.microsoft.com" at: "softlib/mslfiles/wordvu.exe"
  129.  
  130.      (Note: "wordvu.exe" is 1.4-Megabytes in size!)
  131.  
  132. 2) If you have a different MS-Windows-3.1 based word processor (such 
  133.    as WordPerfect or AMI-PRO, you should be able to load the MS-Word
  134.    document directly into your word processor.
  135.  
  136. 3) If you only have the default MS-Windows-3.1 word processor "Write",
  137.    you can view the included files "QUENYA1.WRI" and "QUENYA2.WRI".
  138.  
  139.    Due to formatting limitations, the MS-Word document had to split
  140.    into two MS-Write documents.

  144. What if you can't use the MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic Macro:
  145. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  146. If you don't have MS-Word-6.0, then you won't be able to use the 
  147. MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic macro. That's a shame, because without the macro
  148. the font can be difficult to use. This is due to the nature of the 
  149. Tengwar alphabet. While the English alphabet contains 26 consonants 
  150. and vowels, Tengwar contains close to 50 consonants, a dozen vowels,
  151. plus even more modifying symbols. Altogether there are over 130 
  152. different Tengwar symbols in this font and not all characters are 
  153. easily accessible via a single key on the keyboard.

  155. The MS-Word-6.0 WordBasic macro displays a large window containing 
  156. many push-buttons. Each push button is labeled and represents a 
  157. Tengwar symbol, By using the macro you don't have to remember which 
  158. key on the keyboard is for which symbol.

  160. If you use another word processor, and understand it's macro-language,
  161. and create a similar utility, please pass it along to me and other
  162. Tengwar fans.

  166. If you use Tengwar 1.1
  167. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  168. In January 1994 I released an earlier version of this font. It was 
  169. version 1.1  and appears to be in wide circulation on Internet. If you
  170. are currently using this earlier version: Be Warned - the keyboard 
  171. mapping is different in this new version (1.6) of the font. Unless you
  172. have written a great deal of Tengwar inscriptions, I recommend that
  173. you give this new version a try. Among the advantages of using version 
  174. 1.6 are; greatly enhanced documentation, the MS-Word macro, and 
  175. dozens of additional Tengwar and Tehta symbols and variations of 
  176. symbols.

  180. Coming Soon: Tengwar 1.7
  181. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  182. This next version of the Tengwar font package will include an updated 
  183. "Tengwar Quenya" font containing Tengwar numerals and an additional, 
  184. more calligraphic "Tengwar Brushstroke" font.  Also included will be 
  185. an updated MS-Word macro for accessing the numerals, with droplist 
  186. boxes for changing fonts and point sizes easily.  Macros customized 
  187. for use each major Middle-Earth language should also be available with 
  188. this release.
